Large shrubs, to 2 m tall; bark rough, grey outside, pungent smelling when cut, granular. Leaves pseudoverticillate towards the branch tips, 6-9 x 2-4 cm, elliptic, acute at either ends, 10-12-nerved; midrib tomentose above and below; petiole 1 cm long. Flowers in terminal sessile umbels, pedicels 5 mm long; sepals 2.5 x 1.5 mm, ovate, obtuse, pubescent; petals creamy-white, 12 x 3 mm, oblanceolate, clawed; filaments 6 mm long; ovary densely hairy; style 4 mm long, glabrous. Capsule 8 x8 mm, globose, smooth, black.

Pittosporum species are trees, shrubs or undershrubs, sometimes epiphytic, usually aromatic, branches verticellate, pubescent or glabrous. Leaves simple, alternate or whorled or usually clustered in pseudo-whorls towards the tips or branchlets, linear-lanceolate to ovate-oblong, base cuneate to caudate, margin entire, undulate-dentate or rugose, apex acute to acuminate, membranous to leathery, petiolate, stipules absent. Inflorescence in shortly pedunculate axillary, terminal or pseudoterminal corymbs, umbels or panicles, few flowered or rarely solitary. Flowers bisexual, sometimes functionally unisexual or polygamous, pedicellate, sepals 5, subequal, free or slightly connate at the base, recurved, petals 5, free or connivent slightly above middle or till lower basal part, usually ligulate, segments free partly connate, recurved.
